Stadtwerke Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm and the Research Center for Energy Networks and Energy Storage are working on the research project "Rückgewinnung von Biomasse und Nährstoffen durch eine Kreislaufführung des Prozesswassers bei der biologischen Methanisierung" under the leadership of Electrochaea GmbH. The project, which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy until 2025, is concerned with the further development of the process control of biological methanation using an automatable, closed cycle.
The aim is to develop cell and nutrient recovery in order to save natural resources and reduce costs. Using a closed circuit, the excess process water produced during methanation is to be used in electrolysis without losing nutrient salts or cultivated organisms. A membrane system separates these substances from the water flow and makes them available to the bioreactor again. This is intended to increase the efficiency of the overall process.
The focus of FENES is primarily on the two points "simulation and operating concepts" and "techno-economic and ecological analyses". FENES models the existing plant, including methanation, and defines various operating concepts for the power-to-gas plant together with the project partners. These concepts are then evaluated economically. In the techno-economic and ecological analyses, state-of-the-art plants and the methanation plant with a closed-loop system, which was further developed in the project, are examined and compared.
