Empowering Sri Lanka’s Green Transition: Developing Next-Generation Skills Through a National Joint M.Sc. in Hydrogen-Enabling Technologies

GREEN-HET

The green hydrogen transition plays a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors and enabling sustainable energy systems worldwide. To support Sri Lanka's pathway toward a green economy, the GREEN-HET project establishes a comprehensive higher-education framework designed to equip the next generation of engineers, researchers, and decision-makers with crucial competencies in hydrogen and Power-to-X technologies.

Supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) programme, the project fosters a collaborative consortium between European academic institutions and leading Sri Lankan universities. Together, the partners are developing a joint, nationally accredited M.Sc. in Hydrogen-Enabling Technologies, accompanied by hands-on research capacity building, curriculum co-creation, and strong linkages with regional industry

Key Focus Areas and Work Packages

The core objective of GREEN-HET is to develop, implement, and institutionalize a practice-oriented curriculum tailored to regional renewable potentials and global hydrogen market integration.

Key focus areas include:

  • Curriculum Development: Designing a comprehensive module catalogue encompassing fundamental science, technology, safety, systems modeling, economics, and policy.
  • Institutional Capacity Building: Equipping Sri Lankan universities with advanced pedagogical frameworks, open-source computational tools, and laboratory concepts.
  • Industry & Ecosystem Linkage: Fostering academic-industrial exchange through real-world case studies, student internships, and industry-oriented thesis topics.
