Research, validation and implementation of "Power-to-X" concepts - sub-project site analysis and assessment (SOAB)

P2X Phase III

Renewable energy sources are replacing fossil fuels on the road to climate neutrality. However, electricity generation from sunlight and wind is associated with fluctuations. However, energy is always needed and long-term and flexible storage options are required. Power-to-X technologies, which are being researched as part of the Kopernikus project P2X, offer such necessary storage options. In addition, sustainable Power-to-X products replace existing climate-damaging fossil products.

The third project phase focuses on the P2X demonstration project P2Fuels, in which power-to-liquid crude (synthetic crude oil) is to be processed into standard-compliant kerosene at Frankfurt's Höchst Industrial Park. Together with DECHEMA, GIZ, IZES, Provadis University and WWF Germany, FENES is working on the site analysis and assessment sub-project. The aim of the project is to place the demonstration project in a larger context. This involves analyzing social, ecological, economic and political/regulatory factors in the demonstrator region and at potential other locations. In addition to kerosene, other products and associated exemplary value chains will also be examined.

In the project, FENES is conducting technical, economic and ecological studies for e-kerosene and other hydrogen derivatives. This is carried out for national and international sites, taking into account both the current status of the sites and future demand for the products. In addition, a distinction is made between brownfield and greenfield approaches. This allows well-founded statements to be made about emissions, technical requirements and costs both for the continued use of existing infrastructure in combination with new technologies and for completely new PtX production chains.
